Transitioning Kids Clothes

Today at a client’s house I saw her clever way to manage clothes that didn’t fit her 4-year old son: she had two bags hanging from his closet rod. One was marked “too small” and the other was “too big.”

When the “too small” bag was full, she’d move the clothes to a container to save for her 2-year old to grow into.  The “too big” bag gave her a place to put things she was given or bought ahead of time, but that her son would soon be able to wear.

I always tell clients to keep only what fits their child in the dresser and closet, and this bag system was a great way to transition clothes in and out of the closet.

Getting Organized to Exercise, by guest blogger Catherine Milliken

Hi everyone! I’m Elizabeth’s trainer and see her up to three times a week for Boot Camp, Pilates, and personal training through Karna Fitness. I asked her if I could share some tips on getting organized about exercising, since I believe that’s most of the battle.

Woody Allen said that 90% of success in life is showing up. So why is it so hard to show up to exercise? The answer? Planning, preparing, and letting go of excuses.

  1. 1. Plan your week and establish a routine. Every magazine will tell you that you need to schedule time for exercise, and it’s true! If you have kids, sit down with your partner and negotiate who gets what morning or evening for exercise. I like to do the same thing every week for simplicity sake (ex: Monday is boot camp, Tuesday Pilates, Wednesday run) but you may need more variety or flexibility. Some say it takes three weeks to change a pattern of behavior, so be really committed during that time to “show up.”
  2. 2. Prepare the night before. I’m a morning exerciser, so I like to make sure my bag and water is packed, coffee is in the coffee maker, my outfit and shoes are laid out, and a banana is next to my bag. That way, I can literally jump out of bed, get dressed, and get out the door. I don’t have to think AT ALL, which is helpful at 5:30 am! I’ve gotten lazy a few times and neglected this routine the night before…it ends up taking me three or four times as long in the morning as I walk around in a fog.
  3. If you like to work out in the evening after work, pack your gym bag the night before, along with a pre-workout and post workout snack. Nothing kills motivation like being famished.
  4. 3. Just go, no excuses. “If you go to school and you still feel sick, then you can come home.” You’ve heard this before, right? From your mom, right? SHE KNEW that your sniffle or your “bellyache” wasn’t substantial enough to keep you on the couch all day. She knew that the hardest part was getting out the door. It still is. Take a lesson from mom: if you get dressed, get out the door, drive to class, spend ten minutes at exercise class and STILL don’t feel like it, you can go home.
  5. I tell my clients to adopt a simple mantra, “Don’t think, just go!” At 5:30 am, it’s easy to convince yourself that you can squeeze in a power walk after dinner, but the fact of the matter is, it probably won’t happen, especially if it’s not part of your routine. So stop negotiating with yourself; don’t think—just GO!

Good luck with establishing your routine…it really is 90% of the battle!

She’s followed my tips for getting out the door and almost never misses a class unless it’s for a very good reason, like she is on vacation, or her husband is away. She’s up for ANYTHING and went from basically doing only walking and occasional yoga to running, holding a 2 minute plank, and high intensity interval training!

Letting Clutter Go…for FREE

If you aren’t up for a tag sale to get rid of your unwanted stuff, how about giving it away? Your “trash” truly can be someone else’s treasure.

Here are some ideas for how to get things out for free:

  • I love Freecycle and it’s rare that I can’t get rid of something through my local Freecycle network. This is a real resource, and I’m continually amazed at what I can give away that others want: old magazines, blinds and curtains, and old filing cabinets for example.
  • The free section of Craigslist if you have one in your city.
  • Find or create a Free Table. While walking to dinner with a friend last week, she excitedly pulled me across the street to see the Free Table in her neighborhood. Well known in the neighborhood, the Free Table is a folding table that is always out front of one house, rain or shine. Locals come to drop off items and pick something up. It’s a great way to recycle and keep things out of the landfill.
  • Other friends had a similar idea when they were decluttering before a big move: they created a Treasure Bench. The bench was loaded with items they were ready to part with, and if you came to visit or attended the going away party, you had to leave with an item. I picked up some great kids books for my daughter, and a label maker…and I wasn’t even a Professional Organizer yet!
  • Finally, if you are on the busy street, don’t underestimate the power of leaving something on the curb with a “free” sign. I cleared out three working but un-needed air conditioners from my basement just by putting them out on the curb last summer.

Of course if you are the one shopping for free things, please be sure you really need the item. It’s easy to pick up something saying you’ll use it but if you don’t, it quickly becomes clutter. Donate it or pass it on.

Tips for Tag Sales

It’s Tag Sale time here in New England! If you’ve done the hard work of purging and sorting items, be sure you are set up to have the best sale possible.

Check out the helpful tips in this segment from The Today Show, including:

  • Hang clothes from an inexpensive garment rack
  • Organize items by “departments” such as electronics, kitchen, or clothes
  • Use a corkboard, shelves and stands to display items at eye level
  • Provide as much information as possible on the tags, including size and materials

Summer Guests

Do you have friends or family coming to visit this summer? Here are some tips to help get you organized.

Put the visits on your calendar, so you know who is coming when! I love to use Google calendar that is shared with my husband.

Create a quick “cheat sheet” for your home with key information for guests: how to get on the wireless network, how to work the TV, and any quirks about how to lock the house or where you keep the extra keys.

If you are short on space or don’t have a dedicated guest room, you can still create an inviting space for guests:

  • Have your inflatable mattress or bed ready to go, or sleeping bags for kids.
  • Be sure to have some extra linens and towels on hand, and have them out and ready, so your guests don’t have to go searching through your linen closet to find what they need.
  • Create a guest supply station in a cabinet or closet shelf. (For more tips on creating this station, see the tips for June in my 12 Months of Organizing Calendar…on sale for 50% off!)

Preserving Treasures: Clothing and Fabrics, by guest blogger Gabby Burgman

My daughter just made her First Communion and looked so beautiful in her new dress. But the dress has been hanging in my bedroom for weeks now and I want to preserve it correctly. So I turned to my friend, archivist and professional organizer, Gabby Burgman.

Her guest post is the final installment of our Preserving Treasures series on the That’s Neat! Blog. Read the first posts, Preserving Paper and Preserving Photos.

It’s the time of year for momentous events: First Holy Communion, prom, weddings. You could say it is also your dry cleaner's favorite time of the year as hundreds of dresses pass through their shops.

But before you follow the old advice of having your special garment sealed in a box for posterity, there are a few things to know in order for your dress (or suit) to last a few decades. I'll go through the don'ts first so that you avoid making mistakes that will actually shorten the lifespan of your garment.

Do Not:

  1. Leave your garment in a plastic bag unclean for months or years.
  2. Have your dress/suit vacuum sealed in a box after it has been dry cleaned.
  3. Store your garment in a cedar chest or closet or pack it in moth balls.

What? Aren't these the tried and true ways of preserving garments? Yes, these are tried methods but they have been found to be not true.

Garments stored in vacuum sealed boxes after dry cleaning have been found, once opened, to have yellowed, permanently creased, and become brittle. Why? The off gassing of the dry cleaning chemicals, the lack of oxygen, and the stationary storage of the garment all lead to deterioration of the garment. Garments stored in cedar chests/closets or moth balls end up breaking down due to the acids in the cedar and the off gassing from the moth balls.

The main culprits that shorten the lifespan of your garments are:

  • Light
  • Temperature/Humidity
  • Dust/dirt
  • Acidic environment
  • Lack of oxygen

The best way to think about how you want to store your garments is to think about the environment most of us like: not direct sunlight, ambient temperatures that do not fluctuate, low humidity, and a clean environment, with plenty of oxygen. This is what your garments need to survive long term storage.

What you should do:

  1. Have your garment dry cleaned. Try to get it cleaned within a few weeks of wearing it, especially if there is a stain or a drink (even clear liquids) spilled/dried on it.
  2. As soon as you bring the garment home, remove it from the plastic bag and the wire hanger.
  3. Decide how you want to store it: Hanging up or folded in a box (See below).
  4. Schedule a date with your garment 6 months from now. If you hung the garment, take it out and make sure that it is doing okay. Check for mold, moth holes, or stains. Make sure the shoulder seams are holding up and are not molded to the hanger. If you have to, replace the padded hanger.  Once everything checks out, put the garment back in the closet and make another date for 6 months from now. The same routine will happen for your boxed garments except that you will need to refold the garment in a different direction so as to reduce the wear and tear the original folds experienced in the first 6 months of storage.

To hang:

Make sure you hang the garment on a padded hanger; unbleached muslin is preferred so dye is not transferred.

Use the twill tape loops that were included as part of the garment to hang it on the hanger. These loops help distribute the weight of the garment and alleviate the strain on the shoulder seam stitches.

Store the garment in a cotton bag like this one from The Container Store.

Put this bag in a bedroom closet that is kept in a room that is kept at an even temperature.

To box up:

Purchase an Acid-free, buffered* card board box along with acid free tissue paper. You can usually buy kits that sell these items together. *Note that if you are storing wools, silks, leather, fur, & feathers, you need to purchase an un-buffered box.

Working on a flat surface with no jewelry and clean hands, lay out your garment. For each fold you want to make in the garment, create a roll of tissue paper to act as a cushion to put in-between each fold. This is going to help prevent hard creases in your garment and reduce the strain on the fabric.

Once you have finished folding the garment to the box size, put it in the box but do not tape it shut. Put the box in a bedroom closet that is kept at an even temperature.

If you have the desire to store your hanging or boxed garment in a basement or attic, STOP! If this is a sentimental garment that has value, you should be willing to store it in the appropriate space. You don't tend to store valuable jewelry in the basement or attic and you shouldn't store your sentimentally valuable garments there either.

Follow the directions above and you will have a garment to proudly show off and lend to children and grandchildren.

De-Clutter & Donate: Cars, Boats, Trucks

Not everyone will have a car sitting around to donate, but if you do I just learned that the Salvation Army will not only accept your used vehicles, but that they also take motorcycles, trucks and boats!

Other organizations that accept car donations include:

  • Kars4Kids in Massachusetts
  • Cars for US Troops (supports US Veterans)
  • America’s Car Donation Center (can choose to support many different charities)

If you are in the mood for some big Spring cleaning, consider getting rid of that old vehicle, even if it isn’t in working condition.

Show you Care, not Clutter

With Teacher Appreciation Week, graduations, weddings, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day…you may have a long gift list this time of year.

Forget the mugs, ties, and crystal bowls. Give a gift that shows you care AND that doesn’t clutter the kitchen or end up in the attic.

Here are my favorite choices:

  • Consumables: I’ve written before about the benefits of consumable gifts. This is especially a good idea for teachers, moms and dads. (Of course, always check to be sure the recipient has any food allergies.) Even a wedding gift can include consumables if the couple loves to cook. Check out the Wedding Crate from Penzy’s Spices or the vinegars and oils from Williams Sonoma. Experiences: Ideas here include theater tickets, movie tickets, day at the spa, hot air balloon ride, cooking class, car detailing (my personal favorite for Mother’s Day), museum pass, or even a walk/hike together. Hand-made Artwork or other Craft: For teachers, parents or grandparents, a drawing or card from a child can be a keepsake. For wedding gifts, I’ve had friends who painted me a one-of-a-kind picture and made a quilt. These gifts are not only useful but meaningful.

“Unnecessary” Rearranging

I’m sharing a great post from my friend Casey at loft & cottage interiors about “unnecessary rearranging” projects. It rang true for me, does it for you?

When I have a lot to do, I often do "unnecessary" organizing projects...but it gets me ready for what I really should be doing. And for many of my clients, a bit of quick clutter clearing gets them warmed up to make the tougher decisions.

3 Organizing Tips for Earth Day

1. Use your re-usable bags. The ubiquitous re-usable bags are everywhere now, but only keep those that you really use. And as I wrote about in a recent blog post, you can organize and carry bags in The Tote Buddy…and if you have more bags than you need, pass them on (or use them for items you plan to donate, see #3).

2. Set up your recycling center. Do you have an organized area to catch all the recyclables? Set up the bins and bags in a central spot, such as the kitchen or basement. There are also containers made just for recycling, such as these bins from The Container Store or these from Target. I also like this Simplehuman trash and recycling can.

3. Do a sweep of your closets, and donate any unwanted items. This is a great time of year to de-clutter and donate. Schools and non-profits may be looking for items for their tag sales or fundraisers, plan to hold your own tag sale this summer, or donate to organizations that will pick up like Goodwill or Vietnam Veterans of America.

Favorite Finds Part 2: Storage and Labels

Part 1 of of my favorite finds from the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) Conference focused on keeping paper in order. Now in Part 2, I share cool products for storage and labels.

Storage

My first new find was the Bento Storage collection from Rubbermaid (now available at Target). These boxes come in a variety of sizes and have internal flexible dividers that snap out to create smaller storage within the container. Or push the dividers back against the box wall for an open storage space.

The NACKit!™ reusable labeling system includes pre-printed or blank cards and self-adhesive pockets. Printed lines on the back of the card give you a space to inventory what’s inside the container.

De-clutter & Donate: Give Books to More Than Words

It’s spring cleaning time! And time to purge some books you no longer need or want. Donate them to More Than Words for their annual Spring Clean Book Drive between April 27th – 29th. Located in Waltham, More Than Words accepts books, CDs, and DVDs.

Favorite Finds Part 1: Products for Paper Piles

Here are my favorite finds from the National Association of Professional Organizers Conference for dealing with paper:

WallMates – From At-A-Glance®, these self-adhesive dry erase surfaces turn any wall or flat surface into an area for your to do list, goals, or whatever you need to jot down. WallMates are repositionable, don’t damage your walls (or office furniture) and come blank or with a monthly calendar outline. Thinking beyond the office, this could be a great place for important notes in a kitchen or mudroom.

Bring some more organization to your projects or paper piles with the Stackit™ organizers from Smead . These folders hold papers vertically, with three tabbed sections and a flap.

If you are ready to go paperless, check out the NeatDesk® Scanner from NeatReceipts®. This scanner has separate slots for scanning business cards, receipts, and regular 8x11 documents…all at the same time! A Very Organized Conference

Last week I had a blast at the National Association of Professional Organizers conference in Baltimore!

Over 800 organizing professionals attended, including many leaders in the field. 13 different countries were represented—the profession is expanding to more each year.

One of my favorite presentations was by Bill Rancic, the first winner of Donald Trump’s Apprentice. Bill was the keynote speaker and shared his tips for thinking like an entrepreneur. He came across as a very genuine guy.

I also loved going through the Organizing Expo to find the best new products. More posts to come on what I found!

Finally, I wanted to share that one of my favorite learning sessions was about incorporating ideas from Feng Shui into organizing. I have always been drawn to Feng Shui and now I’m excited to help clients clear the clutter and make room for positive, new energy to come into their lives.

All in all, it was a great conference – so glad I went.

Conference Time

I’m excited to be heading to Baltimore for the National Association of Professional Organizers Annual Conference!

Bill Rancic, the first winner of Donald Trump’s Apprentice contest, is giving the keynote address on Entrepreneurship. I’m also excited to attend sessions on organizing photos (digital and printed) and Feng Shui, among other topics, and will be checking out the latest and greatest products in the Expo. Look for posts on what I found when I’m back.

De-clutter & Donate: Belle of the Ball 2012

Anton’s Cleaners is once again sponsoring the Belle of the Ball, a program to “clean and distribute prom dresses to high school junior and senior girls who would otherwise not have the opportunity to attend their school's prom.”

Taxes: One Month to Go

Today is March 15th, one month before the federal income tax day of April 15th. Are your taxes done? If not, have you carved out some time to do them or get your papers together for the accountant? Take out your calendar and schedule some time right now.

After helping numerous clients over the past six weeks get their papers in order for taxes, I finally got mine done this week. I feel so much better because that task is off my To-Do list, and now I can relax and enjoy the National Association of Professional Organizers Conference next week in Baltimore!

Fun Files at Your Fingertips

I love to use a desktop file holder for key files and action items because it keeps critical information at your fingertips. Why not use a file container that you like to look at?

Organize Your Office March 8th

National Organize Your Office Day is March 8th!

No, I didn't make this up. I just learned that this "holiday" happens every March.

So plan some time this Thursday to give your office a little TLC.

Whether you have 15 minutes or 2 hours, take some action. You’ll feel better, I promise!

  • Clear your desk surface: file papers, get rid of what doesn't belong, keep only what you use every day out
  • File or recycle any papers on the floors
  • Set up an action folder for key projects
  • Purge your file cabinet
  • Control your cords and cables
