Clear the Closet Clutter

Autumn in New England is a season of change. The leaves change colors and the weather cools. Why not change your closet for the better? This is a perfect time to de-clutter your coat or hall closet to get ready for cooler weather.

Here are simple steps to tackle this trouble spot:

  • Take everything, yes everything, out of your closet.
  • Sort similar items into piles based on categories: shoes, coats/jackets, hats/mittens, summer gear (sunscreen, bug spray), and items that don't belong here.
  • Purge your piles. Have your kids outgrown their coats? Do you have a jacket from 1987 that you haven't worn in years? Look through the clothes, shoes, and hats to see what you might be able to donate to charity. Put these in a box marked "Donate."
  • Remove any small summer items and place them in a clear plastic container labeled "Summer Gear." Store this at the back of the closet or high on a shelf.
  • Put back the coats, hats, mittens, and shoes or boots you'll need for fall and winter. Make sure these are easily accessible in the front of your closet. Store lightweight jackets at the back of the closet.
  • Consider containers. Organization is easy with products such as an over-the-door shoe holder with lots of pockets for small items, a shoe rack, and hooks for keys.
  • Take the items that don't belong in the closet back to where they belong. Put your "Donate" box near your door.
  • Take a look at your newly organized closet! You did it. Now get out there and enjoy the autumn weather!
