Client Study: From Clutter to Calm

Thanks to my wonderful client who was willing to share the “before” and “after” photos, here is more detail about how That’s Neat! Organizing™ can help transform your home from clutter to calm.

Kitchen

This room was a priority for the client, who found that the cabinets and counters easily got overwhelmed with items. We first talked about what worked and didn’t work in the space, and then moved through each cabinet sorting, purging, and keeping similar things together.

Like most families with small children, there was an accumulation of plastic cups. We pared down and moved the cups to a lower cabinet, making it easier for the kids to help themselves. Then we re-organized the glassware in the upper cabinet as you can see in this photo.

Pantry

The kitchen pantry was another challenging area. As in many new homes, the pantry had deep shelves. Although the shelves pulled out (a plus), food sometimes spilled over or was lost way in the back. To alleviate this we used clear plastic shoe boxes on the shelves to help keep like items together. We also designated each shelf to contain a specific category of food making it easier to find things and put them away.

Living Room

The living room was our next major area of work. The client wanted to make it more of a grown-up space so we cleared out the majority of toys (see play room below) and hung a few pieces of the clients’ favorite artwork. Since the living room opened into the kitchen, we wanted to keep some toys in the space to occupy the kids while the parents fixed dinner. The client purchased new bins for the toys and books, and the kids easily learned to put their things away in the space.

Play Room

We didn’t get any “before” pictures of this space but these photos illustrate the "after." Before becoming a fun and functional play room, this space was a catch-all for items that were in transit: things to donate or give to friends, things to put in the basement or attic, or things that didn’t yet have a place in the home. We all have spaces like this in our home, and the key was to give the room a purpose. Once we labeled it the “play room” it was clear what belonged in the space and what didn’t. These clients were highly motivated to purge and donate items, and created a beautiful play space for their children that is the envy of the neighborhood.

Here are some pictures of the redesigned play space.
